Foil vs embossing vs spot UV: what each finish looks like

What foil stamping, embossing, debossing and spot UV look and feel like on a luxury box, what each costs relative to the others, and how to combine them.

Your logo finish is often the first thing a customer touches. Before they open the box, before they see the bottle, their fingers run across the lid and their eyes catch the light on your name. The right finish makes a box feel expensive. The wrong one, or too many at once, can make it feel busy.

This guide explains the four most popular finishes on rigid boxes: foil stamping, embossing, debossing and spot UV. For each one you will learn how it is made, what it looks like, where it works best and what to watch out for.

Foil stamping

Foil stamping uses a heated metal plate, called a die, to press a thin metallic film onto the paper. The film sticks only where the die touches, leaving a shiny, mirror-like logo or line.

Colours: gold and silver are the classics. Rose gold, copper, black, white, holographic and coloured foils are also available.

What it looks like: bright and eye-catching, especially on dark or matte paper. A gold foil logo on a black soft-touch box is one of the most recognisable looks in luxury packaging.

Best for:

  • Logos and brand names
  • Fine lines, borders and patterns
  • Small text, as long as it is not too thin

Watch out for: very fine detail or tiny text can fill in during stamping. As a rule, keep lines thicker than about 0.2 mm and text larger than about 6 pt. Large solid areas of foil can look patchy, so foil is best used for details rather than for covering a whole lid.

Embossing

Embossing presses the paper from behind with a pair of dies, so the logo stands up from the surface. You can feel it with your fingertips.

What it looks like: subtle and tactile. Blind embossing (with no colour or foil) gives a quiet, confident look. It catches soft shadows as the box is turned in the light.

Best for:

  • A minimal, high-end look
  • Logos with bold shapes
  • Combining with foil for a raised, shiny logo

Watch out for: embossing needs a bit of space. Very small or very detailed artwork does not lift well, and the effect is strongest on thicker, softer papers.

Debossing

Debossing is the opposite of embossing: the logo is pressed into the surface, so it sits below the paper. It is very popular on rigid boxes because the thick board underneath holds a crisp, deep impression.

What it looks like: clean and modern. On a black or dark box, a debossed logo looks almost engraved. You can see an example on the black shoe box with a debossed logo in our Portfolio.

Best for:

  • Dark, matte or textured boxes
  • Brands that want the logo to be felt more than seen
  • Combining with foil inside the debossed area

Watch out for: like embossing, debossing works best with bold shapes rather than fine detail.

Spot UV

Spot UV is a clear, glossy coating printed only on selected areas, then cured with ultraviolet light so it hardens instantly.

What it looks like: a shine that catches the light against a matte background. On a matte black box, a spot UV logo is almost invisible from the front and then flashes as the box moves. It can also be raised slightly for a textured feel.

Best for:

  • Patterns across a whole lid
  • Logos on soft-touch or matte laminated boxes
  • Highlighting part of a printed image

Watch out for: spot UV needs a matte or soft-touch surface around it to stand out. On gloss paper it disappears.

In terms of cost, each finish usually needs its own die or screen, which is a one-off cost spread across your order. That is why adding a finish affects the price per box more on small runs than on large ones. We show the cost of each finish clearly in your quote, so you can decide what is worth it.

Combining finishes

The most premium boxes often combine two finishes, but rarely more than two. Popular pairings are:

  • Foil + embossing on the logo, so it is raised and shiny at the same time.
  • Debossing + foil, where the foil sits inside the pressed-in logo.
  • Spot UV pattern + foil name, so the lid has depth without extra colours.

A good rule is to choose one "hero" finish for the logo and, at most, one supporting finish for patterns or lines. That keeps the box looking intentional rather than crowded.

Which finish should you choose?

  • Want a classic luxury look? Choose gold foil on a dark matte box.
  • Want quiet and modern? Choose debossing on black or white soft-touch.
  • Want texture people notice? Choose embossing, alone or with foil.
  • Want a pattern that appears in the light? Choose spot UV on matte.
